Details

The Alert was one of several revenue cutters built in the early 1800s based on one of a series of designs by William Doughty. These were all fast ships, rigged as topsail schooners, with large sail area and deep keel, allowing them to sail very close to the wind. The Alert, as with the other Doughty designed ships, was armed with a large carronade on a pivot mount amidships, allowing her to fire to either broadside with the single gun. This gave her a large punch for deterring and capturing smugglers, pirates, and slave ships.

The Alert model is big, with an overall length of 34-1/2” and a height of over 27”. The kit features laser-cut structural parts, some CNC milled parts, lime wood planking strips as well as walnut finish planking, wooden dowels for fashioning the masts and spars, fittings in cast metal, wood, and brass, and several sizes of black and natural rigging cord. Instruction booklet and detailed plan sheets included, showing all stages of construction.

This wooden ship model kit is relatively simple in its construction, but contains a lot of interesting details, so that one can make a real museum piece. The large scale kit that lends itself well to detailing by experienced ship modelers, but also easy construction which is good for beginning ship modelers as well.

An optional set of pre-sewn sails is available separately.
