Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack

Imagine, lobstering under sail! This hardworking ancestor of the Friendship sloop was the basic near-shore fishing boat preferred by the lobstermen of Muscongus Bay, a body of water known for contrary winds, strong tides, and numerous rocky ledges.

The Muscongus Bay Lobster Smack is a traditional wooden boat that has been a vital part of Maine’s lobstering industry for over a century. These iconic vessels were first built in the late 1800s and were specifically designed for lobster fishing in the notoriously rough waters of Muscongus Bay. The name ‘smack’ comes from the sound the boat makes as it hits the water, and this particular type of vessel was favored by lobstermen for its agility and ability to navigate the treacherous waters of the bay.

The fine detailing and accurate construction make this kit a dramatic display model. This intermediate plank on bulkhead model includes many laser cut parts, all necessary planking materials, fittings, rigging cord, and sailcloth. The plans outline steps for radio controlling this model – additional parts would be required. It is important to note that some pictured items may have been built with optional items not included as part of standard kits, such as pedestals, bases, cases, paint, etc. If there are any questions about the contents of a particular kit, please contact Bluejacket.
